About Trinity House Lightship 93 Lighthouse
This steel lightship, constructed in 1939, features a square pyramidal light tower standing 40.85 meters high and a red lantern. Originally serving the Galloper station off Harwich, it guided vessels through significant shipping lanes. After its decommissioning in 2002, the vessel was sold at auction in 2004 and converted into a studio space. It was later moved to the Royal Victoria Dock in 2014 and subsequently to the Royal Albert Dock, opposite London City Airport. The lightship was offered for sale again in 2020 and 2021 before being sold to a new owner.
Why it matters: Its decades of service on the Galloper station provided navigational aid for shipping navigating the waters off Harwich. The lightship's transition to a studio and its current placement in London's historic docks represent a connection to the UK's maritime history.
