The Santo Antônio Da Barra lighthouse is situated in Bahia, Brazil, at the former Ponta do Padrão, now known as Ponta de Santo Antônio. The current tower, constructed in 1839, is made of masonry with a conical shape, topped by a lantern and gallery. This tower stands 22 meters tall and is painted with black and white bands. Inside the structure of the Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra, the lighthouse's original quadrangular form featured a bronze lantern powered by whale oil. The operational status of the lighthouse is currently false.
Why it matters: This structure holds the distinction of being the first nautical signaling system to begin operation in the Americas and is recognized as the oldest lighthouse on the continent.
