About Rufisque Lighthouse
The Rufisque Lighthouse is a square white concrete tower standing 12 meters tall, with its light positioned at the same focal height. First lit in 1879, the original light was updated in 1913. The current structure emits a green light that flashes in an isophase pattern every 2 seconds, visible for 11 nautical miles. Located on a promontory in the city of Rufisque, west of Dakar, the lighthouse is situated on the opposite side of Baie de Gorée. The site is open to the public, although access to the tower itself is not permitted.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for local navigation within Baie de Gorée and for vessels approaching the port of Rufisque, a significant urban center. Its continuous operation since 1879 underscores its enduring role in safeguarding maritime traffic along the coast west of Dakar.
