Querandí Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Querandí Lighthouse
This cylindrical concrete tower, standing 54 meters tall, was constructed in 1922 and first lit in 1916. It is painted with alternating black and white horizontal bands, with a black lantern room. The lighthouse's focal plane reaches 65 meters above sea level, providing a geographic range of 20.8 nautical miles. Five white flashes occur every 26 seconds. Access to the remote site, located atop a forested dune complex about 15 kilometers south of Mar Azul, often requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The area surrounding the lighthouse was designated a nature reserve in 1996, and the tower itself was repainted in 2022.
Why it matters: The lighthouse plays a role in coastal navigation near the Mar del Plata port. Its location within the Reserva Dunícola Faro Querandí highlights its dual function in guiding mariners and supporting environmental conservation.
