Punta Piedras Lighthouse

A square pyramidal steel skeletal tower painted white, standing 31 meters tall, was erected in 1983 at Punta Piedras. This structure replaced an earlier lighthouse that was destroyed by a storm in 1975. The original station was established in 1917. The current tower features a gallery and emits a white flash every nine seconds, visible for nearly 18 nautical miles. It is situated off coastal highway route 11 on a property called El Faro, marking the southern entrance to the Río de la Plata.

Why it matters: This lighthouse guides vessels entering the Río de la Plata from the south, facilitating safe navigation into a major South American estuary.
