About Port Sa'id Lighthouse
Built in 1869, the Port Sa'id Lighthouse stands as an octagonal tower 59 meters high, constructed of brick and concrete. It features a lantern and gallery and is attached to a two-story keeper's house. The tower is distinguished by its black and white checkerboard pattern, applied in 1926. Originally lit in 1860, the lighthouse was designed by François Coignet and was among the earliest large structures to employ reinforced concrete. It is situated on the west side of the Suez Canal entrance in downtown Port Said.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the northern entrance to the Suez Canal, a critical waterway for international commerce. It is recognized as one of the first large lighthouses built with reinforced concrete and stands as the tallest lighthouse in Africa.
