About Ponta dos Cedros Lighthouse
The Ponta dos Cedros lighthouse is a 6-meter concrete tower, with its light situated 149 meters above sea level. It displays a white light with a characteristic of a single white flash every 7 seconds, visible for nearly 30 nautical miles. The original structure, built in two stages with a rectangular lower portion and a pentagonal upper section, featured a white exterior with a red horizontal stripe. This tower became inactive in 2001, with its light being moved to a new, nearby structure. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: Ponta dos Cedros marks the northern tip of Faial, a key navigational point for vessels in the Azorean archipelago.
