Pengjiayu Lighthouse

Fl White 15s🇹🇼Keelung, TWOperational

Also known as: Pengjiayu (Pangchia Yu, Peng Chia Hsu, Pen Chia Yu)

The Pengjiayu Lighthouse, a cylindrical brick tower standing 26 meters tall, was first lit in 1909. Its light, a single white flash every 15 seconds, originates from a focal height of 146 meters, visible for nearly 30 nautical miles. The structure, built on an hexagonal pyramidal brick base and incorporating a keeper's house, features strengthening iron bands. This lighthouse suffered damage from aerial strafing during World War II and subsequent air attacks, which led to a period of service interruption. Following repairs and reactivation in 1995, it continues its function. The lighthouse is equipped with a 1st order Fresnel lens, which remains in operation.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's powerful light and its strategic location near Keelung are essential for guiding vessels in the surrounding waters. Its resilience through wartime damage and its unique, original Fresnel lens underscore its historical and navigational significance in Taiwan.
