About Ogidigben Lighthouse
Also known as: #Ogidigben (Oidigbe, Escravos River)
The Ogidigben Lighthouse, a square pyramidal skeletal tower, stands 40 meters tall and is painted white with a black horizontal band. It was likely established in the 1950s to mark the Escravos River entrance on the west side of the Niger River Delta. The structure, made of steel, housed a lantern and emitted a white light, flashing once every 20 seconds. Its geographic range was approximately 17.1 nautical miles. Although listed as operational, recent assessments indicate it is inactive and likely removed, with no visible trace remaining on modern satellite imagery. The nearest port is Escravos, 2.5 kilometers away.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was critical for maritime traffic entering the Escravos River, a gateway to major natural gas terminals central to the region's economy. Its historical context is deepened by the river's name, Escravos, a reminder of a former slave trading base.
