About Akassa Lighthouse
Also known as: Akassa (Palm Point)
Constructed in 1910, this hexagonal skeletal tower was originally built from unknown materials. The lighthouse was moved between 1915 and 1917 to its current site on the east side of the Nun River entrance. Over time, an upper section was added to raise the light above the surrounding trees. The original lantern has since been replaced by a white, barbell-shaped fiberglass tower, increasing the structure's overall height. The white light emits one flash every 10 seconds and has a geographic range of 20.8 nautical miles. The lighthouse stands 60 meters tall with a focal height of 65 meters.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the southernmost point of the Niger River Delta and guides vessels into the Nun River, one of its principal branches.
