About Nugget Point Lighthouse
The Nugget Point Lighthouse, a cylindrical stone tower standing 9.5 meters tall, was built in 1870. Its black and orange exterior contrasts with the surrounding landscape at the end of a gravel road near Kaka Point. The lighthouse emits two white flashes with an additional white flash every 12 seconds, visible for over 22 nautical miles. The structure includes a lantern and gallery attached to a one-story equipment building. In 2006, the light was converted to an LED lens unit, and the equipment building's roof was replaced in 2016.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for vessels navigating the southern coast of New Zealand, especially around the Nugget Point headland, a location known for its challenging maritime conditions.
