Newport Rock lighthouse, first lit in 1897, guides vessels approaching or leaving the Suez Canal. It is situated on a shoal about 8 km south of the canal's southern entrance, marking the eastern side of the channel. The current structure is a 9-meter tall skeletal tripod tower with a gallery, mounted on three piles, and has a focal height of 17 meters. Its light emits a single white flash every 5 seconds, visible for 12.4 nautical miles. The lighthouse complex, located near Port Tewfik, is accessible by boat, but the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for safe navigation at the southern entrance to the Suez Canal, marking the eastern boundary of the busy shipping channel.
