About Nagoya Pier 10 Lighthouse
Also known as: Nagoya Pier 10 (Coal Wharf)
The Nagoya Pier 10 lighthouse is a 6-meter concrete post completed in 1939. It is centered on a round concrete equipment shelter and stands at the end of Shionagi Pier in Nagoya's inner harbor. The lighthouse's operational period was brief; it was damaged during U.S. bombing raids in 1945 and ceased functioning that year. Despite the damage, the structure was recognized as a historic monument in 2011. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself cannot be entered.
Why it matters: Recognized as a historic monument in 2011, the lighthouse serves as a tangible link to Nagoya's wartime experiences, with its visible war damage offering a memorial to the city's losses during the 1945 bombing raids.
