About Mírina Lighthouse
Also known as: Mírina (Kastro) (?)
A white cylindrical stone tower topped with a green dome, standing 5 meters tall, was built in 1912. This structure, which includes a lantern and gallery, was erected atop the walls of an ancient castle on Límnos. The castle itself was originally a Venetian fort. The lighthouse emits a single white flash every six seconds, with a focal height of 83 meters and a geographic range of 23 nautical miles. Although the castle grounds are accessible, the tower is closed to visitors. The lighthouse's survival is uncertain, as it cannot be definitively located in contemporary satellite imagery or photographs of the ruined fort.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is remarkable for its integration into an ancient Venetian-built castle, a unique instance of navigational architecture within historic fortifications. Its ongoing function highlights the sustained requirement for maritime guidance in the waters near Límnos.
