About Mǎ'ào Lighthouse
This concrete lighthouse, built in 2008, is a round cylindrical tower 15 meters tall with a gallery. It stands on a concrete pier situated on a shoal off the north coast of Zhoushan Island. The tower is black with a single red horizontal band. Its light is white, displaying two flashes every five seconds, and has a geographic range of 11.5 nautical miles. The structure serves as a navigational hazard warning and guidance aid in the waters west of the Xiǎochángshān light.
Why it matters: The Mǎ'ào lighthouse warns vessels of the shoal it occupies, providing a clear navigational reference for local shipping and fishing fleets in busy coastal waters.
