About Manakkodam Lighthouse
This white, square concrete tower stands 34 meters tall and was first illuminated in 1979. Its focal height is also 34 meters, providing a geographic range of 18 nautical miles. The light emits two white flashes every 10 seconds. The lighthouse is located near Andhakaranazhy beach in the Alappuzha district of Kerala.
Why it matters: As the first light in this region, it marked a significant improvement for navigation when it became operational.
Background
Manakkodam Lighthouse is situated next to the Andhakaranazhy beach in the Alappuzha district of Kerala near Cherthala. The tower is a 33.8 metres (110.9 ft) high concrete structure with square cross section. It was inaugurated on 1 August 1979. There were no lights in this area before 1979.
