About Maleas Lighthouse
Also known as: Maleas (Ákra Maleas, Cape Malea)
Constructed from stone in 1883, the Maleas Lighthouse is a 15-meter cylindrical tower with a green dome, situated on a steep slope at the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese. It rises from a one-story keeper's house and features a focal height of 40 meters. The lighthouse emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 17.1 nautical miles. Its remote location on Cape Maleas, approximately 1.5 km north of the cape's southernmost point, makes access difficult. The facility is operational but closed to the public.
Why it matters: The Maleas Lighthouse marks the hazardous Cape Maleas, a significant waypoint for vessels navigating the Aegean Sea, guiding them around its shores. Its structure, a square stone tower attached to a keeper's house, is distinctive in its isolated setting.
