About Machilipatnam Lighthouse
Also known as: Machilipatnam (Manginapudi Beach, Masulipatnam)
This concrete lighthouse, built in 1984, stands 45 meters tall with a focal height of 51 meters. It features a cylindrical concrete tower with horizontal black and white bands and a red lantern dome. The light emits a white flash every 20 seconds, visible for 18.8 nautical miles. An earlier light was first established on the site in 1858, with a shorter tower built in 1930, which this structure replaced. The lighthouse is situated behind Manginapudi Beach, about 15 kilometers northeast of Machilipatnam.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's construction withstood the 2004 tsunami, which reached its base, highlighting its resilience.
