About Ákra Páppas Lighthouse
Also known as: Ákra Páppas (Papas)
Built in 1890, the Ákra Páppas Lighthouse is a white, cylindrical masonry tower standing 11 meters tall. Its lantern is situated 75 meters above sea level, casting a white light with a characteristic of one white flash every 20 seconds. The lighthouse structure includes the tower, a lantern, a gallery, and an attached one-story keeper's house. This station marks the southwestern tip of its island, Ákra Páppas, and is located within the Icaria Municipality. The site is open to visitors, but the tower itself remains closed. The nearest port is Evdilos, 12.1 kilometers away.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is critical for safe passage through the broad channel between Ikaría and Míkonos, a key navigational route for vessels entering or leaving the central Aegean Sea. It also stands as a tangible link to the region's Ottoman past, having been established under their rule.
