About Katapola Lighthouse
Also known as: Katapola (Ákra Ágios Ilias)
This cylindrical stone lighthouse was constructed in 1882. It stands 7 meters tall and is attached to a one-story keeper's house. The structure is situated on a promontory on the west side of Amorgós island, marking the north entrance to the island's only port, Katapola. The light emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 18.1 nautical miles. While the site is open to the public, the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was critical for guiding vessels into Katapola, the sole harbor on Amorgós, an island dependent on maritime connections within the Cyclades.
