About Inner Makatumbe Lighthouse
Also known as: Inner Makatumbe (Dar es Salaam Bay Range Front) (LM7)
The Inner Makatumbe lighthouse is a 15-meter square skeletal tower situated on a platform supported by piles. It stands off the north side of Inner Makatumbe Island, approximately 1.2 kilometers southwest of the Outer Makatumbe lighthouse. The tower is white with a red vertical stripe along the range line. Its focal height reaches 20 meters, and it had a geographic range of 13.2 nautical miles. This navigational aid became inactive in 2024, rendered redundant by a new directional light at the Outer Makatumbe lighthouse. The site is open to visitors, but the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: Its decommissioning illustrates the evolution of maritime safety, as new technologies rendered this older navigational aid obsolete.
