About Ilha da Paz Lighthouse
Constructed from stone, the Ilha da Paz lighthouse is a 16-meter cylindrical tower topped with a lantern and gallery. It was first lit in 1906 and has a focal height of 84 meters. The tower is attached to a one-story stone keeper's house. Its light produces a white flash every 20 seconds, visible for over 23 nautical miles. The original Fresnel lens was removed in 1989 for preservation. A restoration effort began in 2007 but was suspended in 2012, and the island is generally not open to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse guards the entrance to the port of São Francisco do Sul, a key navigation point for vessels entering and exiting the harbor.
