Fort Aguada Lighthouse

The Fort Aguada Lighthouse, a cylindrical stone tower standing 13 meters tall, was built in 1864 within the grounds of the historic Portuguese fortification. Its structure incorporates keeper's quarters and features a lantern and gallery. The tower is painted white, a color that has required repeated efforts to maintain over the years. In the early 20th century, this lighthouse operated in conjunction with another at the same fort to guide vessels along the coast. While it served as a navigational aid until the 1970s, recent decades have focused on its upkeep through various patching and repainting projects, including work in 2005-2006, 2008, and 2010.

Why it matters: This lighthouse is significant for its historical role in maritime navigation off the coast of Goa, particularly as part of a range system in the early 20th century. Its location within the ancient Fort Aguada, a Portuguese fortification, adds to its cultural and historical value.
