About Flat Rock Lighthouse
Also known as: Flat Rock (Kawau Island)
A cylindrical white fiberglass tower stands 8 meters tall on a concrete pier at Flat Rock. This structure, built in 1922, is situated on a skerry off the east coast of Kawau Island. Its focal height is 13 meters, and it emits a white flash every 7 seconds, with a geographic range of 11.3 nautical miles. The station was established earlier, but the first three beacons were lost to storms before the current concrete and fiberglass tower was erected. Maritime New Zealand manages the operational light.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks a dangerous reef, serving as a critical navigational aid for local shipping and recreational boaters.
