About Felgueiras Lighthouse
Also known as: Felgueiras (Rio Douro North Breakwater)
The Felgueiras lighthouse, built of stone and first lit in 1886, is a round tower standing 10 meters tall with a focal height of 17 meters. Its hexagonal stone structure is topped with a lantern and gallery. Located at the end of the original breakwater on the north side, it marks the entrance to the Rio Douro and the traditional harbor of Porto. The light emitted a red flash every 5 seconds and had a geographic range of 12.4 nautical miles. Although its light became inactive in 2009, the site remains open to visitors, offering views of the Atlantic and the city.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was established to guide ships entering and departing the Rio Douro, serving the traditional harbor of Porto.
