The Dongding Lighthouse is a white, round concrete tower standing 69 meters tall. Its focal height is also 69 meters, and it emits a white light. Originally a brick structure, it was rebuilt as a white fiberglass tower with red banding and a concrete base. The lighthouse began operation in 1871. It ceased functioning for a period due to the August 23rd bombardment but resumed operation in 1971. Access is restricted due to military considerations.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was the first Western-style lighthouse constructed in the Xiamen Bay area after the establishment of maritime affairs by Chinese Customs. It is recognized as a national monument of the Republic of China.
