About Cikoneng Lighthouse
Also known as: Cikoneng (Tjikoneng, Anyer, Fourth Point) {Vierde Punt}
Built in 1885 by the Dutch colonial government, the Cikoneng Lighthouse stands 58 meters tall. Its 12-sided cast iron tower, painted white, supports a lantern and gallery. This structure rises to a focal height of 60 meters, casting a white light with a single flash every 20 seconds that is visible for over 20 nautical miles. The lighthouse was erected following the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, which destroyed an earlier 1806 lighthouse. Situated near the port of Banten, the cast iron tower was designed to endure the area's seismic activity. The lighthouse remains operational and is open to the public.
Why it matters: The Cikoneng Lighthouse warns vessels navigating the Sunda Strait, a significant international shipping lane. Its construction from cast iron provided a resilient structure capable of withstanding regional natural forces.
