About Buenos Aires Province and City Lighthouses Lighthouse
The Martín García Lighthouse is a 13-meter cylindrical tower completed in 1897 on Isla Martín García, an island located at the mouth of the Uruguay River near the Uruguayan shore in the Río de la Plata. This structure replaced an earlier wooden tower. The current lighthouse consists of a round tower with an attached lantern and gallery, connected to a three-story keeper's quarters that also served as military barracks. While the lighthouse became inactive in 1938 and was superseded by a semaphore tower, it remains on the north side of the Río de la Plata near the island's center. It is situated 9.2 kilometers from Punta Pereyra.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is significant for its historical role in guiding vessels through the complex confluence of the Uruguay River and the Río de la Plata, and for its connection to Isla Martín García's unique geopolitical history.
