Barren Island Lighthouse

A white, square skeletal tower standing 14 meters tall guides mariners off the southwest coast of Barren Island. Built in 1993 from steel, it features an enclosed equipment shelter at its base. The lighthouse was first established in 1982, but a volcanic eruption in 1990 destroyed the original structure. It was re-established in 1993 and remained operational until 2013, when it became inactive. The lighthouse is located approximately 100 km east of Middle Andaman Island.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's history is directly linked to the island's volcanic activity, having been destroyed and rebuilt. Its presence aided vessels navigating the waters near this isolated, active volcanic island.
