About Argostóli Lighthouse
Also known as: Argostóli (Ágios Theodoros, Ayious Theodorus)
This lighthouse is situated on the eastern side of the Gulf of Argostóliou, at the northwestern tip of a cape that protects the harbor of Argostóli. The current cylindrical masonry tower, standing 9 meters tall, was constructed in 1960. It features a Doric colonnade surrounding its base. The original lighthouse was first lit in 1828, but a 1953 earthquake heavily damaged the structure. The light characteristic is a single white flash every 3 seconds, with a geographic range of 10.7 nautical miles. The focal height of the light is 11 meters.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is important for vessels entering and departing the harbor of Argostóli, guiding them past the protective cape. Its distinctive architecture, including the Doric colonnade and a light atop a domed structure, makes it a unique landmark.
