About Antirrío Lighthouse
Also known as: Antirrío (Antiríon)
Built in 1880, the Antirrío Lighthouse is a 9-meter tall cylindrical stone tower situated at Cape Antirrion, marking the northern side of the Ríon Strait. This strait, 1.9 km wide, forms the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth. The lighthouse's structure is distinctive, incorporating a lantern and gallery atop the walls of a ruined Ottoman castle. Its light emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 12.2 nautical miles. The lighthouse stands 16 meters above sea level and operates on the northern edge of the municipal unit of Antirrio, near the port.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is important for navigation through the Ríon Strait, a narrow and strategically significant waterway. Its integration with a 16th-century Ottoman castle ruins provides a unique historical and navigational site.
