About Yokohama Marine Tower Lighthouse
The Yokohama Marine Tower, a cylindrical steel skeletal tower standing 106 meters tall, was built in 1961. It features a multistory round observation building at its apex. Initially painted green and red, its color scheme was later altered by city engineers. The tower was operational as a lighthouse until September 2008. It closed for commercial operations in December 2006, but the City of Yokohama took over and reopened it in May 2009. The structure underwent further renovations in 2023.
Why it matters: The Yokohama Marine Tower was once recognized as the world's tallest lighthouse. It remains a significant tourist attraction in Yokohama, offering extensive views of the city and harbor.
