About Yagishiri Lighthouse
Also known as: Yagishiri (Yakashiri)
The Yagishiri Lighthouse, built in 1913, stands on the southeastern tip of Yagishiri island. This octagonal cylindrical concrete tower, painted white and reaching 13 meters in height, is topped with a lantern and gallery. Its light originates from a focal height of 51 meters, casting a white beam with a single flash every 30 seconds. The structure is attached to a single-story keeper's house. The lighthouse is situated near the Yagishiri port, just 0.7 kilometers away, and its operational light has a geographic range of 18.8 nautical miles. Visitors can access the site, but the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse serves as a key navigational aid for local vessels, particularly illuminating the dangerous Kamoi Iwa reef adjacent to the island. Its unique octagonal concrete tower design also presents a distinctive architectural landmark.
