About Ville-ès-Martin Lighthouses Lighthouse
Constructed of granite, the Ville-ès-Martin Lighthouses consist of a cylindrical tower 17 meters high, painted green. Originally built as a daybeacon in 1777, it was later raised and equipped with a light in 1893. The tower stands on the Banc des Morées shoal, approximately 1 kilometer east of Ville-ès-Martin. In 1954, a new lantern and a propane-fueled light were installed. The lighthouse emits three flashes, alternating red and white, every 12 seconds, visible for 11 nautical miles.
Why it matters: This lighthouse warns vessels away from the hazardous Banc des Morées rocky shoal. Its development from a daybeacon to an active navigational aid in 1893 marks a significant adaptation of maritime infrastructure.
