About Ugo Misaki Lighthouse
Ugo Misaki Lighthouse, established and first lit in 1960, is a white concrete cylindrical post standing 10.5 meters tall. The post supports a lantern and rises from a square, single-story concrete equipment room. Its focal height reaches 68 meters above sea level. The light emits two white flashes every 7 seconds, visible for over 21 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated on a promontory about 25 kilometers north of Sakata, near the border of Yamagata and Akita prefectures. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is significant for coastal navigation in the Sea of Japan, warning vessels of the headland it marks. Its unique structure also serves as a visual landmark for mariners.
