Tumpat Lighthouse

🇲🇾MYOperational

Tumpat Lighthouse is a cylindrical brick tower standing 21 meters tall. Originally constructed between the World Wars, it served briefly as a navigational aid before World War II. During the conflict, Japanese forces occupied the tower, repurposing it as a watchtower and signal post overlooking the South China Sea. The lighthouse became inactive after the war and has remained so since. The site, managed by Malayan Railways Ltd., is open to the public, although the tower itself is closed.

Why it matters: This lighthouse marked Malaya's northernmost port on the South China Sea, guiding vessels near Tumpat and highlighting its connection to early transportation infrastructure. Its wartime use as a watchtower also adds to its historical significance.
