About Trinity House Lightship 15 Trinity Lighthouse
This two-masted steel lightship, built in 1955, began its service in 1960. It initially operated as the Scarweather off the Tyne estuary in the North Sea until 1969. For the next decade, from 1969 to 1980, it served as the Swansea in the Bristol Channel. The vessel features a light tower with a lantern and gallery located amidships. After being decommissioned in 1988, it was sold to the organization Fellowship Afloat. It now rests beached on Woodrolfe Creek at Tollesbury, on the north side of the Blackwater estuary. Renovations and upgrades were completed in 2022.
Why it matters: As the Scarweather, it marked the entrance to the Tyne estuary. Later, as the Swansea, it guided vessels through the Bristol Channel.
