Location & Light Range
About Torre de Hércules Lighthouse
This cylindrical, dark gray stone tower stands 49 meters tall, with a focal height of 106 meters, and a geographic range of 25.5 nautical miles. The structure is composed of a square cylindrical stone base, incorporating former keeper's quarters, topped with an octagonal watchroom, lantern, and gallery. Originally built by the Romans in the 2nd century, it served the port of Brigantium. The lighthouse was abandoned during the Dark Ages but was put back into service by the 13th century. It underwent a significant reconstruction in 1785 under King Carlos III, which included extending its height and encasing the Roman structure with new granite masonry. The light emits a white flash every 20 seconds.
Why it matters: The Torre de Hércules is the world's oldest active lighthouse, continuing to guide vessels into the port of A Coruña after nearly two millennia.
