About Tomamae Kō Lighthouse
Also known as: Tomamae Kō (North Breakwater)
This cylindrical concrete tower, standing 11 meters tall, was built and first lit in 1933. Its lantern room and gallery are painted red, matching the tower's color. The lighthouse is situated at the end of Tomomae's main north breakwater in Hokkaido Prefecture. Its light emits a single red flash every three seconds, visible for 11 nautical miles. The breakwater was recently extended by about 30 meters, and the lighthouse was moved to the end of this new section.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's red flash warns mariners of the north breakwater's extension, ensuring safe passage into Tomamae harbor for fishing vessels and other maritime traffic.
