Constructed in 1898, the Tera Shima Lighthouse is an 11-meter cylindrical, tapered stone tower. Painted white, it includes a lantern and gallery. Its light flashes white or red every 3 seconds, with a geographic range of 10.4 nautical miles. The lighthouse sits about 1.1 kilometers from the port of Misumi, off the northeastern coast of an island in the Misumi Strait, roughly 2.5 kilometers south of Uki. Visitors may access the site, though climbing the tower is not permitted.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the entrance to the Misumi port and serves as a navigation aid within the Yatsushiro Bay approach. Its flashing white and red light assists vessels navigating the waters of the Misumi Strait.
