About Surf Coast Shire Lighthouse *** Split Point Lighthouse
Also known as: Surf Coast Shire Lighthouse *** Split Point (Eagles Nest Point, The White Queen)
The Split Point Lighthouse is a cylindrical concrete tower built in 1891, measuring 34 meters in height. Its exterior is painted white, and the lantern roof is red. The light source is positioned at a focal height of 66 meters and produces a white light with four flashes every 20 seconds, visible for 20.9 nautical miles. The lighthouse complex underwent changes with the sale of two keeper's houses in 2004. The site was opened for public tours on November 2, 2005.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the coastal point at Airey's Inlet, offering navigation reference for ships entering the area from the west. The original Fresnel lens incorporated into its design signifies an important element of past maritime technology.
