About Suna Saki Lighthouse
The Suna Saki Lighthouse stands on Sand Cape, marking the southern approach to Uchiura Wan, approximately 2 km northeast of Sawara. Built in 1952, this concrete tower is cylindrical and stands 12 meters tall, with a focal height of 14 meters. It features a two-stage design with two galleries, painted white with a narrow red band at the top of each section. The light emits a single white flash every 4 seconds, visible for 11.6 nautical miles. The structure was later doubled in height with the addition of a second stage, enhancing its navigational capacity.
Why it matters: The lighthouse provides a key navigational reference for vessels entering Uchiura Wan, assisting them in safely passing the Sand Cape.
