About St.-Vaast-la-Hougue Lighthouse
This cast iron lighthouse, built in 1865, stands at the end of the jetty for the harbor of St.-Vaast-la-Hougue, facing l'Île de Tatihou. The cylindrical white tower, which is 11 meters tall, features a red lantern and gallery. Its focal height reaches 12 meters, providing a geographic range of 11 nautical miles. The light emits two flashes of white, red, or green every 6 seconds. Although a light was first established in 1850, the current structure is the oldest surviving cast iron tourelle by Sautter et Lemonnier. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: Architecturally, the lighthouse is historically significant as the oldest surviving cast iron tourelle from the Sautter et Lemonnier firm. It guides vessels into the harbor of St.-Vaast-la-Hougue with its directional light system.
