About Spanische Leuchttürme auf historischen Postkarten Lighthouse
A cylindrical stone tower, 10 meters in height, was constructed in 1881 to replace an earlier light at Villaricos. This structure, painted white, features a lantern and gallery and is attached to a square, single-story keeper's house made of stone. The light operated on Spain's Mediterranean coast in Almería Province, near the southern end of Garrucha. Its service concluded in 2021 when it was deactivated due to visibility issues caused by modern high-rise buildings. The Mojácar light now serves this area. The former keeper's house continues its maritime connection, now functioning as the port captain's office.
Why it matters: This light was established to improve navigation for vessels entering Garrucha's port. Its decommissioning illustrates the impact of coastal development on traditional navigational aids.
