Sendai South Breakwater Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Sendai South Breakwater Lighthouse
A round cylindrical concrete tower, 12 meters in height, the Sendai South Breakwater Lighthouse was first lit in 2013. It is painted white and stands 15 meters above sea level. The light emits a green flash every 6 seconds and has a geographic range of 11.9 nautical miles. This structure replaced a lighthouse that was heavily damaged and torn from its foundations by the March 2011 tsunami. The current light is a replica of the one that stood before the disaster.
Why it matters: Reconstructed after the 2011 tsunami, this lighthouse ensures safe passage into Sendai Harbor. Its lantern dome features a crescent symbol, honoring the city's founder, Date Masamune.
