About Scalea Lighthouse
Constructed in 1922, the Scalea lighthouse is a stone tower painted red with white trim, standing 13 meters tall. This square cylindrical castellated structure is attached to a 1-story keeper's house. It is situated on a steep bluff at the north end of Scalea, a tourist town in Calabria. The lighthouse ceased operations in 1981 and its lantern has since been removed. The site is now private property, but the tower and keeper's house remain visible from nearby streets.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's square cylindrical castellated stone tower, painted red with white trim, represents a distinctive architectural style for the region. Its visibility from the street in a popular tourist town makes it a point of interest connecting visitors to the area's maritime heritage.
