Royan Jetée du Sud Lighthouse

Fl (2) Red 10s🇫🇷Royan, FROperational

This white, cylindrical masonry tower, 10 meters in height, was erected in 1954 at the terminus of the Royan breakwater. A gallery crowns the structure, and a circular balcony encircles the watch room level from which the light is shown, rather than from the tower's apex. The original station originated in 1899; however, its initial lighthouse sustained damage in World War II, leading to the use of a temporary tower until the present edifice was completed in 1954. The light cycles through a red flash every 10 seconds (Fl R 10s) and possesses a geographic visibility of 10.7 nautical miles.

Why it matters: This navigation aid marks the entrance to the Royan port and functions as a reference point for the ferry passage over the Gironde estuary.
