About Rompeolas de Zumaya Lighthouse
Also known as: Rompeolas de Zumaya (Zumaia Breakwater)
This cylindrical stone tower, standing 7 meters high, was built in 1927 at the end of a large, curving breakwater. This structure protects the western entrance to the Río Urola estuary. The light's focal plane is 20 meters above sea level and emits a green flash every 5 seconds. It has a geographic range of 13.2 nautical miles. The tower itself does not feature a lantern, with the light emanating directly from the top of the conical stone structure. The site is accessible to the public, though the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: The light is essential for navigating the Río Urola estuary and guiding vessels past the breakwater into Zumaya's harbor.
