About Roches-Noires Lighthouse
Built in 1920, the Roches-Noires lighthouse is a 19-meter cylindrical stone tower located east of Casablanca harbor. Its light, positioned 21 meters above sea level, emitted a white flash every 4 seconds and had a geographic range of 13.4 nautical miles. The structure features a round masonry tower with a lantern and gallery. It stands inland, separated from the water by a rail yard, presenting an industrial setting. The lighthouse ceased operations in 2023 and is now inactive, with the site and tower closed to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was instrumental in guiding vessels through the eastern approaches to Casablanca harbor, a significant port for Moroccan commercial shipping. Its presence represented a part of Casablanca's industrial maritime heritage.
