About Pulau Usukan Lighthouse
Also known as: Pulau Usukan (Tanjung Kunit)
The Pulau Usukan Lighthouse, a cylindrical tower standing 16 meters tall, was constructed in 1964. Its distinctive design features a red round tower with a white horizontal band. Located on the westernmost point of Pulau Usukan island, it is situated approximately 50 kilometers north of Kota Kinabalu. Although it was officially deactivated in 2014 and its duties transferred to the Slime Rock beacon, recent observations, including a 2023 photograph showing solar panels, suggest a potential reactivation. This hints at a possible continued role in local maritime safety, overlooking the South China Sea.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's position on the island's western tip helps define the coastal boundary for navigation. Its potential reactivation, indicated by solar panels, suggests a local recognition of its ongoing utility for maritime awareness.
